SHOUTcast Streams and HTML5 Players Work Here!

Stream101 is proud to announce that all of our HTML5 players work with our services. Thanks to our team of engineers, we were able to update all of our players to work with SHOUTcast v1, thus saving our clients from having to reconfigure their stations and migrate.

Thank-you to the clients who helped us test the new solutions out! In addition, this update has allowed us to expand our players to even more people by running all the streams over a native web port, thus removing the “block” imposed by many employers who block ports other than the standard web ports.

Discontinuance of PayPal Subscriptions

Beginning on May 1st, 2016, we are no longer allowing PayPal Subscriptions to be created. Instead, we have moved to using PayPal Billing Agreements. Additionally, all active subscriptions will need to be moved to a Billing Agreement prior to June 1st, 2016 – at which time, all remaining subscriptions will be terminated.

What is a PayPal Billing Agreement?

A PayPal Billing Agreement (also called a “Reference Transaction” by PayPal) is a way of authorizing Stream101 to charge you for your purchases, making it easier for you to pay us.

Why did you switch?

As we advance and offer more services, our customers are purchasing different packages, adding additional items, changing packages, etc. With a PayPal subscription, you are forced to pay a specific amount on a specific date. Therefore if you upgrade plans, you need to either cancel your current subscription and start a new one, or manually pay/subscribe a second time. It is more hassle for you and us!

How do I change to a Billing Agreement from a Subscription?

This part is very easy! You can do it one of two ways:

  1. Follow the steps outlined here.
  2. Pay your next invoice manually by logging in and choosing “Automatic PayPal” as your payment option. It will automatically cancel your subscription and get you setup.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this change, feel free to open up a ticket to the billing department!

Let’s Encrypt – Open Source SSL Certificates Now Available at Stream101!

Let's Encrypt LogoLaunched in December of 2015, a new certificate authority named Let’s Encrypt entered Public Beta. With the launch of Let’s Encrypt, any website publisher could now obtain an SSL certificate for their website at absolutely no cost to them! Instead of having to purchase a dedicated IP, purchase an SSL certificate, configure and then install the certificate, our clients can now obtain and install a certificate in 2 clicks! We’ve gotten a few requests from some of our more tech savvy users about when we would be supporting Let’s Encrypt. Some of you have already implemented this, as we have been silently testing this feature for about 1 month now. We’re happy to announce that it is being publicly launched today!

What is Let’s Encrypt?

Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG). The main goal of Let’s Encrypt is to enable every website to have encryption available, ultimately making web browsing much safer! Stream101 is a huge supporter of this and is very excited to be a part of it.

So…make it simple for me. What are the benefits?

  • Super Easy Installation
  • No Dedicated IP Needed
  • Automatically Renewing
  • 100% Free!

How do I install my Let’s Encrypt Certificate at Stream101?

Installing your free certificate is as easy as logging into your cPanel account and clicking Install! Full details on how to install it can be found in this Knowledgebase Article.

Thank-You for choosing Stream101 and allowing us to help better the internet with your help!

Stream101 to Replace MySQL with MariaDB

Happy First Day of Spring!

We would like to thank-you for being a Stream101 client! As part of our dedicating to keeping our services at the top quality and cutting edge, we have elected to migrate away from MySQL and move to MariaDB. NOTE: This only affects customers utilizing MySQL Databases.

What is MariaDB?
MariaDB is a community-developed fork of the MySQL relational database management system. It is notable for being led by the original developers of MySQL, who forked it due to concerns over its (MySQL’s) acquisition by Oracle. MariaDB intends to maintain high compatibility with MySQL, ensuring a “drop-in” replacement capability with library binary equivalency and exact matching with MySQL APIs and commands. It includes the XtraDB storage engine for replacing InnoDB, as well as a new storage engine, Aria, that intends to be both a transactional and non-transactional engine perhaps even included in future versions of MySQL.

What do I need to know?
The biggest thing for our customers to understand is some of the changes that will be happening when switching over to MariaDB. Many outdated software will not be able to utilize the speed enhancements of MariaDB, however most backwards compatibility will remain. We are currently running MySQL 5.6 on all of our hosting servers now, and most features should transfer over. As always, it is recommended that our clients keep their software as up to date as possible for both performance and security reasons.

This link will give you some information regarding the feature comparison chart of MariaDB and MySQL: https://mariadb.com/blog/mariadb-10-vs-mysql-56-feature-comparison-update

Will my software that uses MySQL be compatible?
Most of the time, yes. MariaDB utilizes a lot of backwards compatibility (just as MySQL 5.6 did for the previous versions of MySQL). As mentioned above, you should really ensure your software is updated to the latest version as many security and performance enhancements most likely would have occured. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee compatibility for each and every software, so our advice is to contact your software vendor and ask.

When will this change occur?
Our current plans are for this change to take effect on May 1st, 2016 at 8AM.

How long with the migration take?
We have done extensive testing and preparations in our Sandbox environment, and most migrations took less that 15 minutes with replications of the current live data.

Have more questions?
Put a ticket into the Support Department and we’ll be able to point you in the right direction.
Thanks again for being a wonderful Stream101 customer and enjoy your first day of Spring!

Widespread WordPress Vulnerability

Wordpress Logo

WordPress Logo

This is a general announcement for all users of WordPress to bring your attention to an XSS vulnerability affecting multiple WordPress plugins and themes. The vulnerability is caused by a common code pattern used in WordPress plugins and themes. Anyone using a WordPress website, regardless of where the theme or plugin was sourced, needs to be aware of this and take immediate action to ensure it is secure.

Please note that this has nothing to do with our hosting in any way. In fact, it has nothing to do with hosting from any company. The vulnerability is with WordPress, WordPress Themes, and WordPress Plugins.

What should I do?

There is no easy way of knowing exactly which plugins or themes are affected so our best advice is to periodically check for updates to any WordPress themes or plugins you are using and apply those available as soon as possible.

For updates to items obtained from other sources, please check the Plugins and Themes pages in the WordPress Admin area or contact the source of the product.

We strongly recommend continuing to check for updates, especially over the next few weeks, but also on an ongoing basis. It is important to always keep your WordPress installation and associated plugins and themes up to date. If you still have concerns, we suggest engaging an experienced WordPress developer to check whether your site is affected.

SHOUTcast/ICEcast HTML5 Player (ProTools v2)

We’re very excited to release a brand new player for exclusive use by Stream101 Clients! We’ve taken feedback from our clients on which features we should add to the player and we’ve listened!

Many clients were asking for us to come up with a player that has reliable Now Playing information with Album Art capabilities. That is exactly what this player does. It functions again as a popup player versus an embedded player. Embedded players are very tricky to do and often require special configurations on the client’s (your) webhost. To simplify things as much as possible, we have elected to go with another popup player.

Installing the player is easy. It can be found in the Widgets section of your Media Control Panel.

  • Fully HTML5 Compliant
  • Flash Fallback for older browsers
  • Full SHOUTcast & ICEcast Support (MP3 Streaming)
  • Album Art Delivered via iTunes (Option to purchase Album/Songs via iTunes coming soon)
  • Full Listener Pass-Through (Statistics show listeners locations/IP’s instead of the Player’s information)
